Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, was founded by Congregationalists, and chartered in 1769. It is famous in American constitutional history for having supplied the test case as to whether the State Legislature had the power to dissolve private trusts. It originated out of a school for Indians established at Lebanon, Connecticut, by Reverend Eleazar Wheelock. His son, John Wheelock, succeeded him in the presidency.
