A gazetteer is a geographical dictionary, a book containing descriptions of natural and political divisions, countries, cities, towns, rivers, mountains, etc, alphabetically arranged. Among the more famous gazetteer have been M'Culloch's Geographical Dictionary, Longmans' Gazetteer of the World, Blackie's Imperial Gazetteer, Lippincott's Pronouncing Gazetteer (based upon Blackie's), Saint-Martin's Nouveau Dictionnaire de Geographic Universelle,and Ritter's Geographisch-Statistisches Lexikon.
