The Probert Encyclopaedia of General Information SLATE Slate was the name given to a tablet used for writing. They were often made of slate, or an imitation thereof, enclosed in a rectangular wooden frame. Slates were written upon using a slate pencil, the characters being easily removed with a damp cloth.
