Slate was the name given to a tablet used for writing. They were often made of slate, or an imitation thereof, enclosed in a rectangular wooden frame. Slates were written upon using a slate pencil, the characters being easily removed with a damp cloth. Slates were once used in British schools but by the 1920's had become almost extinct, though a few schools used them still. Research Slate
