Sweet-William (Dianthus barbatus) is a biennial plant of the pink genus of the family Caryophyllaceae native to southern and eastern Europe from where it was introduced to Britain around 1573 as a garden plant. Sweet-William has a stiff, jointed stem that bears lance-shaped leaves in pairs, and divides at the top into a cluster of flower-stalks. The natural colours of the flowers are white or pink, but under cultivation other colours occur. Research Sweet-William
