Antoine Laurent Lavoisier was a French scientist. He was born in 1743 at Paris and died in 1794. Educated at the Mazarin College he won a prize for the best method of lighting Paris and proved the modern theory of combustion. He was made a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1768 and in 1776 director of powder works. In 1794, owing to his position as fermier-general, he was condemned to the guillotine.
