Hardicanute or Harthacnut (Canute II) was the only legitimate son of Canute and King of England from 1040 to 1042, and king of Denmark in 1014. At the time of his father's death, in 1036, he was in Denmark, where he was immediately recognized as king. His half-brother Harold, however, who happened to be in England at the time, laid claim to the throne of that part of their father's dominions, and succeeded in getting possession of Mercia, Northumbria, and Wessex, but died in 1040, when Hardicanute peacefully succeeded him. He reigned until 1042, leaving the government almost entirely in the hands of his mother and the powerful Earl Godwin, while he gave himself up to feasts and carousals. Research Hardicanute
