HENRY HUDSON

Picture of Henry Hudson

Henry Hudson was an English sailor and explorer. He died in 1611. He sailed from London on a small boat, the Hopeful in 1607 in the service of the Muscovy Company in search of a north-east passage to the Spice Islands and touched at Greenland and Spitsbergen. In 1609 he set out from Amsterdam in the Half Moon with a crew of twenty men, crossed the Atlantic and discovered and explored the Hudson river. In 1610 he sailed again to find a north-west passage, investigating the bay later called after him, there he was caught in ice. Discontent occurred among the crew who mutinied and Henry Hudson and seven others were set adrift in a small boat, never to be seen or heard again.
