HIPPARCHUS

Hipparchus was a Greek astronomer. He was born in 190 BC at Nicaea in Bithynia and died in 120 BC. He resided for some time at Rhodes, but afterwards went to Alexandria, then the great school of science. A commentary on Aratus is the only work of his extant. He compiled the first known star catalogue and first ascertained the true length of the year, discovered the procession of the equinoxes and determined the revolutions and mean motions of the planets.
