HUMPHREY GILBERT

Sir Humphrey Gilbert was an English navigator. He was born in 1539 and died in 1584. He was a half brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, and sought to discover a north-west passage to India, and wrote a treatise on the subject. In 1578 he made an expedition which met with no success. In 1583 he planted a colony at Newfoundland which did not prosper. On his return he was lost at sea.
