James III was King of Scotland from 1460 to 1488. He was born in 1453 and died in 1488. The son of James II, the kingdom during his minority was governed in turn by Bishop Kennedy and the Boyd family. During his life James III was controlled by favourites. Prominent among these was Cochran, a mason, through whom one brother of James III was obliged to flee the kingdom, and another was put to death. The nobles seized Cochran and five others and hanged them. Latterly a plot was formed to dethrone the king, and though many peers remained loyal to him the royal army was defeated at Sauchie, near Stirling, in 1488, the king's son being on the side of the victorious nobles. James III escaped from the field, but was murdered during his flight. Research James III
