KANAKA

Properly, the Kanakas were the native inhabitants of the Sandwich Islands. However, the name was applied in New Caledonia and the New Hebrides to all the native labourers, without distinction of origin. And in Queensland Australia, the name was applied to South Sea islanders shipped in as slaves for use on the sugar plantations.
