The Navaho (Navajo) are a peaceable agricultural North American Indian people related to the Apache originally occupying the northern part of New Mexico and Arizona.. Like the Apache, they speak a Southern Athapaskan language. The Mexicans continually attempted to reduce them, but failed. After long-continued hostilities against the whites, ColonelCarson compelled them in 1863 to leave their country and remove to Bosque Redondo as prisoners of the Government. In 1868 they were removed to Fort Wingate, and in 1869 were again placed in their old country. Research Navaho
