NICHOLAS HERKIMER

Nicholas Herkimer was an American soldier. He was born in (1715 and died in 1777. He was appointed a colonel of militia in 1758, and commanded at Fort Herkimer against the French and Indians. He was appointed brigadier-general of militia by the State Convention in 1776, and marched against Sir John Johnson's force of Tories and Indians. He was mortally wounded at Oriskany in an expedition for the relief of Fort Stanwix, which was besieged by St Leger in 1777.
