Noah Webster was an American author, politician and lexicographer. He was born in 1758 at Connecticut and died in 1843. He first came to prominence by the publication of a spelling book, of which 62,000,000 copies were issued. In 1784 he published 'Sketches of American Policy', which had influence upon the movement toward a national constitution. In 1787 he published 'The Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution'. In 1795 he wrote articles signed 'Curtius', which were influential on behalf of the Jay treaty. In 1806 he published 'Compendious Dictionary of The English Language' and in 1828 'An American Dictionary of The English Language' which survives in revised forms today as 'Webster's Dictionary of The English Language'. He served in the legislatures of Connecticut and Massachusetts. Research Noah Webster
