Sir William Alexander (Lord Stirling) was an American soldier. He was born in 1726 at New York and died in 1783. In 1757 he laid claim before the House of Lords to the earldom of Stirling, but in vain. He became Surveyor-General of New York and in 1775 a colonel in the Revolutionary army. In 1776 he was promoted to brigadier-general and in 1777 major-general. He distinguished himself at Trenton, Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. Research William Alexander
