EDWARD ALLEYN

Edward Alleyn was an English actor and theatre proprietor. He was born in 1566 at Bishopsgate, London and died in 1626. Between 1605 and 1614 he purchased the Manor of Dulwich for 10,000 pounds from Sir Francis Carlton and began building the college, with chapel and almshouses, obtaining a royal charter for incorporating and endowing the charity in 1619. The college, 'The College of God's Gift' became the famous Dulwich College.
