MARGARET RUTHERFORD

Picture of Margaret Rutherford

Dame Margaret Rutherford was an English actress. She was born in 1892 at Balham, London and died in 1972 of pneumonia. She began her acting career first as a student at London's Old Vic theatre, debuting on stage in 1925 and in 1933 she first appeared in the West End, and had her film debut in 1936, portraying Miss Butterby in the film 'Dusty Ermine'. Her most famous role was perhaps as 'Madame Arcati', the medium in 'Blithe Spirit'. Noel Coward actually modelled the character especially for Margaret Rutherford to play, which she did first on stage and then in the film version.
