The Probert Encyclopaedia of Sumerian Mythology

NERGAL

Nergal was the Babylonian god of the underworld. He was represented by the figure of a winged lion with a human head. In Mesopotamian mythology, Nergal was amorality personified and symbolized the unpredictability and risk in mortal life, and in particular brought death. In Assyrian mythology,
Nergal was the god of hunting and warfare. It was the Assyrians who first assigned the planet Mars to this god.
