HYOID BONE

The hyoid bone is the U-shaped bone that can be felt on pressing deeply into the throat a little below the chin. It suports the tongue, to whose muscles it gives attachment. It consists of a body and four processes or cornua which project upwards and backwards. In youth the body and cornua are more or less separate, being connected only by cartilages and ligaments, but in old age all the parts become ossified into one bone.
