The vocalis muscle (thyroartenoideus internus) originates from the depression between the two laminae of the thyroidcartilage and inserts in the vocal process of the arytenoid cartilage. It is innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve. The vocalis muscle, as the name implies, is an import muscle for speech. It shortens and relaxes the vocal cords to create sound. Vocal sounds are created by closing and tightening the vocal cords. The cords vibrate and emit sound as air is pushed past them.
