ALGERINE WAR

The Algerine War was a short affair between the USA and Algeria fought in 1812 following a treaty signed in 1795 between the Dey of Algiers and the USA by which the USA paid a ransom for American captives and promised an annual tribute in exchange for commercial privileges. In 1812 the Dey of Algiers declared war on the USA and the US navy sailed against Algeria, defeated the navy and the Dey submitted.
