BATTLE OF CEDAR MOUNTAIN

The Battle of Cedar Mountain occurred on July the 9th 1862 during the American Civil War. General Pope, commanding the Union troops, having come into contact with a portion of Jackson's army, Banks was detailed with a force of 8000 to engage him, although Jackson's army numbered more than 16,000. Banks charged Jackson's rear as he retreated toward Culpeper. The Confederates were for a time in great confusion, but Jackson succeeded in rallying them and in repelling Banks' assault. Banks fell back to a strong position and Jackson, unwilling to attack him, retreated to Gordonsville. The Union loss was 1800, that of the Confederates 1300.
