The Battle of Cedar Mountain occurred on July the 9th 1862 during the American Civil War. General Pope, commanding the Union troops, having come into contact with a portion of Jackson's army, Banks was detailed with a force of 8000 to engage him, although Jackson's army numbered more than 16,000. Banks charged Jackson's rear as he retreated toward Culpeper. The Confederates were for a time in great confusion, but Jackson succeeded in rallying them and in repelling Banks' assault. Banks fell back to a strong position and Jackson, unwilling to attack him, retreated to Gordonsville. The Union loss was 1800, that of the Confederates 1300. Research Battle of Cedar Mountain
