BATTLE OF CHATEAUGAY

The Battle of Chateaugay was an action that occurred on October the 25th, 1813. On the banks of the Chateaugay stream in New York, guarding a ford was Lieutenant-Colonel Salaberry with 1000 British troops. The American general Hampton with 4000 men attacked in two divisions. A series of blunders, disgraceful to the American arms, resulted in the inglorious retreat of the Americans. Their loss was thirty-eight men, the British twenty-five.
