BATTLE OF CONTRERAS

The Battle of Contreras was a short battle during the Mexican War between Pillow's and Twiggs' divisions of General Scott's army and forces led by Valencia, of Santa Anna's army. The battle took place between August the 19th and 20th 1847 . Pillow and Twiggs had been left by Scott upon the construction of a road during his approach to Mexico City. On August the 19th Valencia made an attack, but was repulsed and ordered by Santa Anna to retreat. This he refused to do and the next day his camp was attacked and his forces routed.
