BATTLE OF DALLAS

The Battle of Dallas was a four days' fight between Edward Johnston's and Slier-man's armies, during the latter's advance upon Atlanta during the American Civil War in 1864. The fighting took place from May the 25th to May the 29th. The Confederates, about 40,000 strong, were under the immediate command of Hardee, and lay entrenched about Dallas, Georgia. McPherson attacked them with 20,000 Federals. Schofield was ordered to flank the Confederate right, but as he made this attempt Edward Johnston himself struck heavily upon McPherson's main command. However, the Federals moved to the left along the Confederate front and gained the Allatoona Pass. Edward Johnston was thus forced to leave his entrenchments and retire on May the 29th.
