During the American Civil War, Deep Bottom, Virginia was selected by Butler during the campaigning around Richmond and Petersburg in 1864 as a position from which to threaten Robert E Lee. A lodgement was effected there on June the 21st, and Foster was there posted with a strong force. Robert E Lee, fearing this position, made several ineffectual attempts to secure it, and at last Ulysses Simpson Grant ordered a counterattack on July the 26th and 27th. Hancock turned the Confederates' advance position while Foster feinted an attack upon his front. The plan worked so successfully that Miles' brigade outflanked the Confederates' outpost and carried away four guns. Robert E Lee fell back to Bailey's Creek, but continued to hold his strong defensive work at Chapin's Bluff. Research Battle of Deep Bottom
