The Battle of Fort Moultrie was an engagement of the American War of Independence that occurred on June the 28th, 1776. When the British attempted to capture Charleston, South Carolina, they found the city defended by a palmettofort on Sullivan's Island, under command of ColonelMoultrie. After a ten hours' engagement the fleet withdrew. The American loss had been only thirty-seven, that of the British, 305, and only one of their ten sail remained seaworthy. After refitting, Clinton and Parker sailed to New York. For more than two years there was no further invasion of the South. Research Battle of Fort Moultrie
