The Battle of Hanging Rock was an engagement on August the 6th, 1780 during the American War of Independence. General Sumter surprised the British post at Hanging Rock. The Toryregiment fled, and its panic was communicated to the British regulars. At the outset no American had more than ten bullets, but before the close of the engagement they armed themselves from the dead and wounded. Among those engaged was Andrew Jackson. This success strengthened the American patriot cause in all parts of South Carolina. Research Battle of Hanging Rock
