The Battle of Island No 10 in the Mississippi River was an engagement of the American Civil War. The island had been fortified by General Polk, Confederate, and was commanded by General Mackall with about 8000 troops of Beauregard's army. It was bombarded for three weeks by Commodore Foote, commanding seven Federal gunboats, and surrendered on April the 8th, 1862. The evacuation was forced by Pope with a large land force. He, under cover of a vigorous fire from two gunboats, which had run past the island by night, brought his men across the river in transports. The defenders of the batteries fled, and were pursued into the swamps. Nearly 7000 prisoners were taken, together with an immense quantity of ammunition and supplies. Research Battle of Island No 10
