BATTLE OF IUKA

The Battle of Iuka, Mississippi occurred during the American Civil War. Iuka was an encampment of several thousand Confederate troops under General Price. Ulysses Simpson Grant sent Rosecrans with 9000 men to destroy Price's army and prevent his co-operation with Bragg. Rosecrans, after some delay, attacked the Confederates and a fierce battle followed, on September the 19th and 20th, 1862, both sides losing heavily. At night the Federals lay down on their arms, expecting to renew the fight the next day, but the Confederates moved during the night. Rosecrans pursued, but did not overtake them.
