BATTLE OF JACKSON CITY

The Battle of Jackson City, Mississippi occurred during the American Civil War. The battle took place on May the 14th, 1863, between McPherson's division of Ulysses Simpson Grant's army then operating along the Mississippi River, and a South Carolina brigade of Edward Johnston's army, commanded by Walker. Crocker's troop bore the brunt of this fight, defeating the Confederates by their impetuous and untiring charges. The latter fled to their defences in the town, but were shelled out of these by William Sherman on July the 10th to the17th, after the fall of Vicksburg, Edward Johnston had again retreated to his entrenchments. There he was invested by William Sherman's troops, who partially surrounded the town and opened fire upon it. Ammunition gave out, however, and Edward Johnston, taking advantage of a lull, destroyed as much of the town as he could and retreated under cover of a dense fog, on July the 17th.
