BATTLE OF KINGSTON

The first Battle of Kingston, North Carolina occurred on December the 14th, 1862, during the American Civil War when General Foster, en route with 11,000 Federals to destroy the important railway junction at Goldsboro, fell in with the Confederate General Evans, commanding 6000 troops. An engagement was immediately begun. Evans was posted between a dense swamp and the bridge over the Neuse River. This was speedily captured and the Confederates dispersed.

A second engagement of the American Civil War occurred at Kingston, North Carolina on March the 8th and 10th, 1865, when there was some sharp fighting between the Federals under Cox, of Schofield's army, and the Confederates under Bragg and D H Hill. Bragg was in full retreat from Wilmington when he was overtaken by Cox. Bragg was compelled to retire to Goldsboro on March the 10th. There were about 13,000 men engaged on either side.
