BATTLE OF SORAUREN

The Battle Of Sorauren was an engagement of the Peninsular War that occurred on July 28th 1813. The Battle Of Sorauren was the fiercest of the Pyrenees battles, and was the culmination of Marshal Nicolas Soult's advance to relieve San Sebastian. The Duke of Wellington's allied forces numbered about 12,000 when Marshal Nicolas Soult attacked with about 24,000 troops. After severe close-combat fighting involving bayonets, the French, unable to remove the British from their defensive lines, were forced to withdraw. Two days later another engagement took place at Sorauren as the Duke of Wellington was driving Marshal Nicolas Soult back across the Pyrenees.
