BATTLE OF STANISLAU

The Battle of Stanislau was fought between the Russians and Austro-Germans in August 1916 during the Great War. As part of Brusiloff's offensive, against the Austro-Germans which began in June 1916, Lechitsky had conquered the Bucovina, and, advancing to the Dniester-Pruth area, had taken Tlumatch on the 30th of June, but had been forced to withdraw before Bothmer's counter-offensive south of the Dniester on July the 2nd. The Russian offensive recommenced at the beginning of August, with the right flank of Lechitsky's forces aiming for Stanislau as its objective, which the Germans evacuated before the advancing Russian forces and the Russians entered the town on August the 10th finding it in good order.
