BATTLE OF TANNENBERG

The Battle of Tannenberg took place from August 26th to August 30th 1914 during the Great War, between the Germans and Russians near the village of Tannenberg in East Prussia. The battle was a German victory over the Russians, and virtually destroyed the Russian Second Army and relieved the danger of invasion in East Prussia. The German forces were commanded by Hindenburg, the Russian forces by Samsonoff and Pestitch both of whom were killed in the battle. After the battle, the Germans had taken over 90,000 Russian prisoners and only 60,000 Russian soldiers survived the reatreat back over the frontier into Russia.
