BATTLE OF THE DUNES

The Battle of The Dunes was a victory obtained by an Anglo-French army under Turenne over the Spaniards under Don John of Austria and Conde on the dunes east of Dunkirk in June 1658. The objective of the French was to capture the Spanish-occupied town of Dunkirk, and the victory by the French led to the capture of not only Dunkirk, but also Bergues, Dixmude and Oudenarde. The victory was largely due to the action of the English Royalist exile forces, which led the assault before being supported by French cavalry.
