BATTLE OF THE SPURS

The Battle of the Spurs was a battle fought near Therouanne between the English and the French on August the 16th 1513 while Henry VIII was besieging Therouanne. To relieve the hunger of the garrison the French planned to threaten the English with 8000 men, while a small column rushed in supplies. The English learned of the plan, and when the French appeared they found themselves ambushed by two forces. After a brief cavalry skirmish the French knights spurred away, whence the name of the battle. At the battle Bayard was taken prisoner. The plan to resupply Therouanne failed, and six days later the city surrendered.
