BATTLE OF THE STANDARD

The Battle of The Standard was fought between the English and the Scots on August the 22nd 1138 near Northallerton, Yorkshire, in which the English defeated the Scots. Under David I the Scots invaded England to support the cause of Matilda against Stephen. The archbishop of York and the bishop of Durham took the lead in collecting an army, which gathered around the banners of St Cuthbert and St John of Beverley, and St Wilfred of Ripon. These banners were all fastened together on a pole and surmounted by a cross, thus giving the battle its name.
