The Battle of Flodden was a celebrated battle in which James IV of Scotland was defeated by the Earl of Surrey on September the 9th, 1513 near the village of Flodden in Northumberland. The loss of the Scots was from 8000 to 10,000 men, including the king, the Archbishop of St. Andrews, and a large number of the nobles; that of the English from 6000 to 7000. At the beginning of the battle the armies mustered respectively 30,000 and 32,000 men. The English victory was so near a defeat that Surrey was unable to prosecute the war with any vigour.
