The Capture of Fort Griswold occurred on September the 6th, 1781. In view of the siege of Charles Cornwallis in Yorktown, Clinton attempted a diversion upon Connecticut with Benedict Arnold in command. The only spirited resistance was offered by the garrison of Fort Griswold, 157 in number. After losing 192 of his 600 regulars Benedict Arnold carried the fort. No quarter was given and the survivors were massacred, only twenty-six of them escaped. New London was laid in ashes, and before sunset the enemy returned up the Sound.
