CAPTURE OF TREBIZOND

The Capture of Trebizond was a Russian success during the Great War and occurred on April the 18th 1916. After the capture of Erzerum in February 1916, by General Yudenitch, his right flank, moving up and along the Black Sea coast and supported by the Black Sea fleet drove the Turks in that area to Riseh, and captured that town on March the 7th. Reinforced by land and sea, the enemy stubbornly opposed the Russians, and it was April the 7th before the Russians reached Kara Dere. Trebizond was defended by some 50000 soldiers, with whom the Breslau and other Turkish warships co-operated. After a fierce struggle the Russians forced a crossing of the river, and captured the city on April the 18th.
