The Dieppe Raid was a reconnaissance in force action which occurred on the 19th of August 1942 at Dieppe, France during the Second World War. 6000 men of the 2nd Canadian Division and 3 British Commando attacked the German-occupied French port of Dieppe in daylight, and were repulsed with the loss of 4617 men, one destroyer, 33 landing craft, 28 tanks and 106 planes. The German defending forces, in contrast, lost 591 men, 8 guns, two ships and 48 planes. The raid was a disaster for the Allies, who only succeeded in destroying the German coast defence battery at Varengeville, though they did gather intelligence and learned lessons which were later put to use in the D-Day landings.
