The Mauser Gewehr 98 (Mauser Rifle Model 98) is a German manual bolt action rifle developed in 1898 and produced until at least 1950. The Gewehr 98 takes a 7.92 mm X 57 round from a 5-round box magazine and fires with a muzzle velocity of 754 meters-per-second and it is sighted to 2000 meters, though the effective range is 600 metres. During the Second World War, the Gewehr 98 was issued to reserve formations and Volkssturm personnel by the German army
