LANCASTER

Lancaster was a 19th century designation for cannons and rifles with a slightly oval bore designed by the English gunsmith Charles Lancaster. The Lancaster guns has a rifled but not grooved barrel with an elliptical bore, of which the major axis was turned round until it traversed one-fourth of the circumference. The projectiles were also elliptical, so that when the gun was fired the projectile followed the twist of the bore, acquiring a rotary motion.
