The Treaty of Ryswick in September 1697 brought to an end the Nine Year's War, in which France had been opposed by a strong European coalition, including England, Spain, Holland and the Empire. It was the first decisive check that Louis XIV received, and marked a decline in the prestige of France. France recognised William III and the Protestant succession in England, ceded many towns in the Netherlands, as well as Luxembourg, and of all the gains she had made kept only Strasbourg.
