The Type 96 LMG was a Japanese gas-operated automatic light machine-gun introduced in 1936 as a replacement for the Taisho 11. The Type 96 LMG was chambered for the 6.5 mm Arisaka rifle (38th Year) round which it took from a 30-round box magazine and fired with a cyclic rate of 550 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity of 732 meters per second to an effective range of 500 meters. The Type 96 LMG had a 551 mm long barrel and was fitted with a 2.5 x magnification telescopic sight and frequently a bayonet.
