Pyrolusite is an oxide of manganese of the rutile group with the formulae MnO2 and a relative hardness of 3. It is the major ore of manganese which is used in the manufacture of steel. Pyrolusite is formed when manganese is dissolved out of crystalline rocks and then redeposited in dentrites etc. Pyrolusite was confirmed as a distinct species of mineral in 1827. Research Pyrolusite
