A taximeter is an apparatus by means of which the legal fare is calculated and shown to the hirer of a taxi. The mechanical taximeter was invented by A Gruner of Magdeburg in 1895 and operated on the basic principal that for any complete revolution of a vehicle's wheel, the vehicle has travelled a certain distance. Gruner's taximeter linked to the vehicle's wheels and measured revolutions over time, and allowed five different tariffs by changing the gearing ratio to the taxi's wheels. Research Taximeter
