The Sasser worm is an Internet worm that affects personal computers using the Windows XP and Windows 2000 operating systems originating from Germany where it was written by an 18 year old student, and first detected on the 1st of May 2004, and on the 4th of May infected the British Coast Guard offices rendering their PCs unusable. Upon infecting a computer the Sasser worm copies itself to the computer's Windows directory using the file name 'avserve2.exe' and creates a registry run key to load itself automaticaly when the computer is started. The worm then scans random ip addresses looking for a remote machine to connect to via TCP port 445 and listens on successive TCP ports starting at 1068. It also acts as an FTP server on TCP port 5554, and creates a remote shell on TCP port 9996. The Sasser worm exploites a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows which allows it to copy itself to remote hard disks. A side effect of the worm is that it causes LSASS.EXE to malfunction, resulting in infected machines running
slowly and continuously rebooting.
