Smurf is a type of DoS attack against networks in which a hacker sends a large amount of ICMP echo traffic to a subnet broadcast addres with a spoofed return address, which is the adress of the intended victim. When a machine on the network receives the ICMP echo requests they reply with an echo reply to the spoofed return address. On a large network thi can result in a large amount of traffic being sent to the spoofed IP address (the victim) flooding their network.
